Application process for student visa
- Choose a School/University
- Research and select a Japanese institution (university, language school, or vocational school).
- Ensure the program/course you want to study.
- Apply and Receive an Admission Offer
- Apply to the chosen institution and meet all the entry requirements.
- Upon acceptance, you will receive an admission letter or enrollment confirmation.
- Prepare Required Documents
- Gather all the documents required for both the Certificate of Eligibility (COE) and visa application (listed below).
- Apply for the Certificate of Eligibility (COE)
- The Japanese institution you have been accepted into will apply for the COE on your behalf from the Japanese immigration office.
- The COE confirms you are eligible to study in Japan and is essential for your visa application.
- Processing time for COE is typically 1 to 3 months.
- Receive the COE
- Once approved, your institution will send you the COE.
- The COE is usually valid for 3 months.
- Apply for the Student Visa
- With the COE in hand, visit the nearest Japanese embassy or consulate in your home country to apply for the student visa.
- The embassy or consulate will process your application, which generally takes 5 to 10 business days, but may vary by country.
- Receive Your Visa
- If approved, your student visa will be issued and stamped in your passport.
- The visa will be valid for the duration of your course (typically up to 1 year).
- Make Travel Arrangements
- Book your flight and plan your travel to Japan.
- Ensure you have all the necessary documents (passport, visa, COE) ready for entry.
- Departure to Japan
- Upon arrival, present your passport, visa, and COE to immigration authorities.
- You will be issued a residence card (if applicable) upon entry.
- Complete Enrollment at Your Institution
- Once you arrive in Japan, go to your institution to complete the enrollment process.
- If required, register at the local city or ward office to obtain your residence registration.
- Begin Your Studies
- After completing all formalities, you can start your studies in Japan.
